Kruger National Park

The Park is situated on South Africa’s border with Mozambique, in the country's Lowveld. It is one of South Africa’s oldest and biggest reserves in Africa. The park boasts a fabulous variety of game and birdlife in its various habitats; it is a must on a trip to South Africa, for an African safari. The park area occupied is between the Sabie River in the north and the Crocodile River in the south. The Kruger National Park is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. Some of the game life in this park is the famous Big Five: Elephant, Lion, Rhino, Buffalo and Leopard. There are also Zebras, Wildebeest, Bush pig, Impala, Giraffes and baboons which are all quite easily spotted.

The best time to see game in the Kruger National Park is during the winter months of April to September, as water is restricted to rivers and waterholes, the animals congregate there. Visibility is also good as the vegetation is less dense. The summer months of October to March are lovely due to the rains - everything is lush and green, but as there is so much more water around, the animals are much more spread out, so watering holes by the roads are used much less. Bird watching safaris at this time of year are excellent. November and December are the calving months, you will see lots of young animals, but remember, and at this time the animals are very protective of their young, so keep a safe distance between yourself and the larger animals which have calves.

The Kruger National Park is open all year round and is open during day light hours usually the gates open between 05h30 and 06h00, the rules are simple, stay in your car, unless in a designated viewing area or rest camp, stay on the roads, take all of your rubbish home, don't feed any animals and observe the speed limit. On the tarmac roads, it is 50km per hour and on gravel roads, it is 40km per hour.
