10 Days Liwonde National Park, Zomba Plateau and Lake Malawi Safari

This safari starts and ends in Malawi. It gives one a real flavor for the diverse and beautiful landscapes of Malawi. You will explore the Zomba plateau, Liwonde National Park and Lake Malawi on this 10-day trip.

Day 1: Arrive in Lilongwe
On arrival in Malawi, you will be met and driven to a quiet guesthouse in a wooded suburb of Lilongwe. Overnight at Madidi Lodge/Sunbird Lilongwe Hotel

Days 2 & 3: Transfer to the Zomba Plateau
Enjoy a spectacular drive through the Malawi countryside to the Zomba plateau. Originally the colonial capital of Malawi, Zomba town maintains a buzzing atmosphere, however the surrounding countryside is incredible scenic and peaceful.

Your accommodation on the Zomba plateau will be the lovely forest lodge for the next 2 nights. From the lovely hilltop base of Zomba, there are numerous gentle walking trails on the plateau. Enjoy trout fishing, bird watching or simply relaxing in front of the crackling log fire.

Days 4, 5 & 6: Head to Liwonde National Park
Enjoy a beautiful journey down the Zomba escarpment and through the Great Rift Valley to the gates of Liwonde National Park, Malawi’s best wildlife reserve. Then board a boat for a short trip down the Shire River to beautiful Mvuu Camp, your accommodation for the next 3 nights in the heart of Liwonde National Park. Mvuu Camp is a charming mix of stone and canvas chalets, offering a magnificent river vista. In addition to boat trips on the river, wildlife drives (morning and afternoon), nature walks, bike rides and bird watching are popular guest activities at Liwonde.

Days 7, 8 & 9: En-route to Lake Malawi
Continue northwards by road, through rural villages and plantations to the shores of Lake Malawi at Cape Maclear. From here, the beautiful 40 minute boat journey over to Mumbo Island takes you to another world, the Galapagos of Africa! Mumbo Island is a pristine and otherwise-deserted tropical island floating on the blue waters of Lake Malawi National Park, the first Park in the world set aside for the protection of freshwater fish.

Day 10: Return to Lilongwe
After a relaxing breakfast, you will to Cape Maclear by boat. From here, your scenic road journey will take you along the Lake shore and up the Rift Valley escarpment back to Lilongwe.
